Position: Heavy Equipment & Concrete Batching Plant Mechanic

 Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment & Concrete Batching Plant Mechanic at GS Group Uganda is responsible for overseeing the mechanical integrity of our construction fleet and concrete production facilities. S/he is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on heavy earthmoving machinery and stationary batch plant components (conveyors, mixers, pneumatic systems). The primary goal is to maximize equipment uptime, ensure operational safety, and support uninterrupted concrete production.

 Major Duties & Responsibilities

1. Concrete Batch Plant Maintenance

·        Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair stationary concrete batching systems, including aggregate bins, weigh hoppers, and silos.

·        Service and replace mechanical components such as conveyor belts, rollers, pulleys, and gearboxes.

·        Repair and calibrate pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including air compressors, actuators, and control valves.

·        Inspect and maintain central mixers, twin-shaft mixers, and batch plant dispensing gates.

2. Heavy Construction Fleet Repair

·        Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures in heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks).

·        Perform routine maintenance on concrete transit mixers (mixer trucks), including drum drive systems and chutes.

·        Conduct engine overhauls, brake replacements, and transmission repairs on diesel fleet vehicles.

·        Utilize electronic diagnostic tools to read fault codes and troubleshoot complex electrical systems.

3. Preventative Maintenance & Safety

·        Execute scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) programs for both rolling fleet and stationary plant equipment.

·        Strictly adhere to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety procedures during plant maintenance and structural repairs.

·        Maintain accurate service logs, tracking parts used, repair hours, and upcoming maintenance intervals.

·        Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and occupational safety regulations on-site.

Perform any additional related tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.

 About You

Education & Experience

·        Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years as a heavy equipment mechanic, with specific experience working on concrete batching plants or automated manufacturing systems.

·        Technical Skills: Proficiency in welding, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, structural fabrication, and reading hydraulic/electrical schematics.

·        Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 25 kg, work at heights (silos/conveyors), and perform physical labor in outdoor construction environments.

·        Certifications: Valid driver’s license (Commercial Driver’s License/CDL is highly preferred for moving fleet vehicles).

Preferred Skills

·        Certification or diploma in Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering.

·        Strong knowledge of computerized batching software and electrical control panels (PLCs).

·        Proven troubleshooting skills under tight timelines to prevent concrete setting inside mixers or trucks.
