Position Summary

The Registered Midwife is responsible for providing safe, high-quality maternal, newborn, and reproductive health services at the AsOne Ministries health facility in the community.

The role combines strong clinical and midwifery competence with compassionate, respectful, woman-centered care, ensuring positive pregnancy, birth, and newborn outcomes for mothers and their families.

The Registered Midwife works closely with the Clinical Officer/In-Charge, fellow health workers, and the local community to promote safe motherhood, family planning, and child health within a Christ-centered model of care.

Key Responsibilities

Antenatal Care

• Conduct antenatal care assessments and examinations for pregnant women in line with Uganda-focused antenatal care guidelines.
• Screen, monitor, and manage common and high-risk pregnancy conditions within the scope of practice.
• Refer complicated cases promptly to the Clinical Officer/In-Charge or an appropriate higher-level facility.
• Provide health education on nutrition, birth preparedness, danger signs, and emergency preparedness.
• Administer routine antenatal interventions, including tetanus immunization, iron/folic acid supplementation, deworming, and malaria prophylaxis as guided by national protocols.
• Provide HIV counselling and testing.
• Initiate and monitor appropriate prevention of mother-to-child transmission services.
• Maintain accurate antenatal records and mother-baby health cards.

Labour, Delivery & Postnatal Care

• Provide skilled attendance during labour and delivery.
• Monitor maternal and fetal well-being using the partograph and other approved tools.
• Conduct normal vaginal deliveries safely.
• Apply appropriate measures for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage.
• Recognize, manage within scope, and promptly refer obstetric emergencies and complications.
• Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation where necessary and within competence.
• Provide essential newborn care, including drying, skin-to-skin contact, cord care, and early initiation of breastfeeding.
• Provide postnatal care to mothers and newborns.
• Monitor for postpartum complications.
• Provide wound or episiotomy care as appropriate.
• Support breastfeeding and newborn-care practices.
• Educate mothers and families on postnatal danger signs, newborn care, hygiene, and birth spacing.

Family Planning & Reproductive Health

• Provide family planning counselling and services within the scope of practice.
• Provide appropriate short-term and long-term family planning methods.
• Offer cervical cancer screening.
• Support STI screening, treatment, and reproductive health education within the scope of practice.
• Support adolescent- and youth-friendly reproductive health services with confidentiality and sensitivity.
• Promote healthy birth spacing and informed reproductive health choices.

Child Health & Immunization

• Conduct growth monitoring and nutrition assessments.
• Support under-five clinic services.
• Administer routine childhood immunizations according to the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunization schedule.
• Screen for and manage common childhood illnesses within the scope of practice.
• Refer complicated cases appropriately.
• Support exclusive breastfeeding and infant and young child feeding counselling.

Emergency & Referral Care

• Identify and respond promptly to maternal, newborn, and gynaecological emergencies.
• Initiate appropriate first-line emergency management within the scope of practice.
• Coordinate timely and safe referral of high-risk mothers, newborns, and complicated cases.
• Communicate clearly with families and receiving facilities during referrals.
• Maintain emergency delivery and newborn resuscitation equipment and supplies in readiness.

Records, Reporting & Compliance

• Maintain accurate maternal, newborn, and child health records, registers, and partographs.
• Ensure records comply with Ministry of Health HMIS requirements.
• Compile and submit timely maternal and child health reports.
• Maintain records for ANC, deliveries, PNC, and immunization services.
• Participate in maternal death reviews, clinical audits, and quality improvement processes.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements.

Resource & Facility Management

• Maintain adequate stocks of essential maternity drugs, delivery kits, and newborn-care supplies.
• Ensure proper sterilization and infection prevention and control practices in the maternity/labour ward.
• Monitor equipment functionality, including delivery beds, newborn resuscitation equipment, and weighing scales.
• Report faulty equipment and coordinate maintenance or replacement as required.
• Contribute to budgeting and procurement planning for maternal and newborn health supplies.

Teamwork & Community Outreach

• Work collaboratively with the Clinical Officer/In-Charge and other health workers.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development.
• Collaborate with Village Health Teams (VHTs) and community health structures.
• Support antenatal follow-up, birth notification, and postnatal home visits.
• Participate in community health education and outreach clinics.
• Support safe motherhood awareness campaigns.
• Educate mothers, families, and community members on safe motherhood practices.
• Demonstrate Christian values of compassion, dignity, and respect in maternal and child health services.

Other Duties

• Perform additional duties assigned by the Clinical Officer/In-Charge or AsOne Ministries leadership as required.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery, or Registered Comprehensive Nursing and Midwifery, from a recognized institution.
• Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) and in good standing.
• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in maternal and newborn health.
• Experience in a labour ward or maternity unit is preferred.
• Sound knowledge of Uganda Ministry of Health safe motherhood protocols.
• Knowledge of FANC, IMCI, and PMTCT guidelines.
• Valid certification in:
  • Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
• Demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered service.
