Position Summary

The Registered Nurse will provide safe, competent, and compassionate nursing care to patients at Healing Grace Medical Center, while supporting the Clinical Officer in diagnosis and treatment.

The role also involves delivering excellent, Christ-centered customer care to patients, caregivers, and community members while upholding the professional code of conduct established by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Receive, triage, and assess patients, prioritizing care according to urgency and severity.
  • Take and accurately record vital signs, patient histories, and clinical observations.
  • Administer prescribed medications, injections, immunizations, and treatments.
  • Provide wound care, dressing changes, and other basic clinical procedures.
  • Support antenatal, postnatal, child health, immunization, and family planning services.
  • Assist with emergency care and stabilization of patients.
  • Escalate and refer cases appropriately.
  • Monitor patients’ progress and response to treatment.
  • Promptly report changes in patients’ conditions to the Clinical Officer.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on disease prevention, medication use, nutrition, and self-care.
  • Provide holistic physical, emotional, and spiritual support, including prayer where appropriate and welcomed.
  • Strictly follow infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of sharps and clinical waste.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient records.
  • Maintain nursing notes, treatment charts, and vaccination records.
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly nursing reports, statistics, and returns.
  • Support HMIS/DHIS2 reporting and other required health information systems.
  • Monitor medicines, vaccines, and medical/nursing supplies.
  • Participate in ordering, inventory checks, and expiry-date monitoring.
  • Ensure proper use, sterilization, maintenance, and safe storage of nursing equipment.
  • Support patient appointment scheduling, home visits, referrals, and follow-up care.
  • Ensure compliance with clinic policies, national health regulations, licensing requirements, and data protection standards.
  • Assist with preparations for inspections, audits, and visits by health authorities or partners.

Customer Care & Stakeholder Relations

  • Welcome every patient with warmth, respect, dignity, and patience.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and caregivers.
  • Explain procedures, treatment, and next steps clearly.
  • Maintain a calm, reassuring, and professional approach, especially with vulnerable or distressed patients.
  • Manage patient flow during triage and treatment to minimize unnecessary waiting.
  • Handle patient and caregiver concerns and complaints professionally.
  • Escalate concerns when necessary.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
  • Follow up with patients and families after treatment, discharge, or referral.
  • Build respectful professional relationships with colleagues, management, suppliers, donors, and visiting partners.
  • Represent the clinic professionally when engaging with district health officials, community leaders, and partner organizations.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with families, referral facilities, and community health volunteers.
  • Demonstrate Christ-like compassion and encouragement in all interactions.

Collaborative & Team Duties

  • Work closely with the Clinical Officer, midwives, laboratory technicians, pharmacy staff, and community health workers.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement discussions.
  • Mentor and support nursing aides, interns, and volunteers when required.
  • Engage with local health facilities and district health offices to strengthen referral pathways.
  • Work with partner organizations to support community health programmes.
  • Participate in staff devotions, fellowships, and outreach initiatives.

Professional Development

  • Reflect on nursing practice and pursue continuous personal and professional development.
  • Attend Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) sessions.
  • Maintain current professional licensing and certification.
  • Stay updated on nursing best practices, national treatment guidelines, and relevant health trends.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Clinic Manager or administration as required.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Certificate or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Experience in primary care, rural, or community health settings is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of:
    • General nursing procedures.
    • Maternal and child health.
    • Common communicable diseases.
    • Common non-communicable diseases relevant to the local context.
Technical Competencies
  • Proficiency in patient triage and basic clinical procedures.
  • Competence in medication administration.
  • Strong record-keeping and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of HMIS/DHIS2 and other basic health information systems.
  • Sound knowledge of infection prevention and control.
  • Safe medication and medical-supply management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong customer-care orientation.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Basic computer literacy for reporting and record management.
  • Ability to create a safe, dignified, and nurturing environment for patients’ physical and spiritual well-being.
