The Need

For 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people globally from violence by 2030, we are seeking to recruit a SAFETY & SECURITY ASSOCIATE- FORT PORTAL.

Job Summary: The safety & security associate ensures the safety and security of personnel, assets and operations by implementing and overseeing security protocols, conducting risk assessments, and advising leadership on threat mitigation strategies. This role supports organizational resilience through proactive planning, incident response and continuous improvement of security practices in alignment with global standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and threat analyses to determine vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation strategies for staff, facilities, and field operations.
  • Oversee the implementation and compliance of security protocols, contingency plans, and operational safety procedures across all office and field locations.
  • Advise staff and leadership on emerging security risks, disseminate timely security communications, and explain procedures to ensure situational awareness and preparedness.
  • Examine and reconcile incident reports, access control systems, and safety audits to sustain a secure working environment and anticipate future risks.
  • Appraise the effectiveness of security training programs and recommend improvements to build staff capacity and foster a culture of safety and vigilance.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to assess and analyze security threats, risks, and vulnerabilities in diverse operational environments, and to recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Proficiency in implementing and overseeing tactical security operations, including evacuation planning, incident response, and access control systems.
  • Effective communication and advisory skills, with the ability to explain security protocols clearly, disseminate timely threat information, and engage effectively with staff and leadership.
  • Capacity to conduct and reconcile security assessments and audits, ensuring compliance with organizational standards and sustaining a culture of safety and preparedness.
  • Experience in coordinating and training multidisciplinary teams, fostering engagement through security awareness programs and operational readiness initiatives.

Education & Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in security related, international relations or other relevant field or candidate with equivalent combination of a certificate/diploma and relevant work experience in a law enforcement agency or INGO setting.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in conducting protective service/ security operations for a law enforcement agency or with relevant INGO work experience.
  • Expertise in the analysis of security threats, risks and vulnerability in Uganda.
  • Experience in crisis management preferred.
  • Experience in conducting route analysis.
  • Experience in security guard/contractor supervision preferred.
  • Experience in VIP and/or witness protection preferred.
  • Experience conducting investigations.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural environment.
  • Formal protective service operation training preferred.

Critical Qualities:

  • Mature Christian faith as defined by the Apostles’ Creed.
  • Proven ability to design, implement and review tactical security operations in the field.
  • Computer literate with a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Excellent security situation assessment, analysis, decision-making and oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in the English language both written and spoken is mandatory. Working knowledge of local languages added advantage.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license (at least 5 years) with no incidents.
  • Excellent Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Power Point and Excel.

*What is a statement of faith?
