Location: Namutumba Community, Uganda (with regular community travel)
Department: Education

About the Role

The School Driver will safely and reliably transport students, staff, and visitors using the school’s coaster bus and van. The role also involves caring for the vehicles, ensuring roadworthiness, following traffic and school safety regulations, and maintaining a high standard of professionalism when working with children.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely transport students, staff, and visitors to authorized destinations.
  • Follow approved routes and schedules for student pick-up and drop-off.
  • Observe all Uganda traffic laws and school transport safety policies.
  • Ensure students are safely seated and secured before the vehicle moves.
  • Assist younger children when boarding and leaving the vehicle.
  • Maintain discipline and safety among passengers during transportation.
  • Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
  • Check the vehicle after every trip to ensure no child is left behind.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after trips.
  • Check tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors, fuel, oil, water, and general roadworthiness.
  • Keep the coaster and van clean and presentable.
  • Report mechanical faults, damage, or safety concerns immediately.
  • Coordinate routine servicing and vehicle maintenance.
  • Ensure insurance, road licences, inspection stickers, and other vehicle documents remain valid.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks, including mileage, fuel use, trips, and incidents.
  • Maintain first aid kits and fire extinguishers in the vehicles.
  • Respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, and other emergencies.
  • Avoid mobile phone use and other distractions while driving.
  • Coordinate transport schedules with school leadership and teachers.
  • Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, and school staff.
  • Support school trips, sports events, outreach activities, and other off-site programs.
  • Assist with transporting school materials and supplies when required.
  • Report transport and safety concerns to the Director of Operations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Head Teacher or administration.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum of an O-Level certificate.
  • Valid driving permit in Classes D and D1.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional driving experience.
  • Experience driving coaster buses or similar passenger vehicles.
  • Experience transporting school children is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Ugandan traffic laws and road safety regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
  • Defensive driving or vehicle mechanics training is an added advantage.
