Position Summary

The Sonographer will perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations that support accurate diagnosis and treatment, particularly in maternal and general healthcare.

The role requires a high level of technical competence, confidentiality, discretion, and professional integrity when handling sensitive ultrasound findings, images, and patient information. The Sonographer will also provide warm, respectful, and Christ-centered customer care to every patient.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including:
    • Obstetric ultrasound.
    • Gynecological ultrasound.
    • Abdominal ultrasound.
    • General soft-tissue ultrasound.
  • Perform scans as requested by the Clinical Officer or referring clinician.
  • Position patients appropriately and operate ultrasound equipment safely and effectively.
  • Obtain clear, diagnostic-quality images.
  • Accurately document sonographic findings and prepare clear reports for referring clinicians.
  • Identify and promptly flag urgent or abnormal findings to the Clinical Officer for appropriate action.
  • Conduct antenatal ultrasound examinations to assess gestational age, fetal growth, fetal position, and well-being.
  • Work closely with the maternal health team in interpreting and communicating relevant findings.
  • Maintain and calibrate ultrasound equipment.
  • Keep equipment clean, functional, and safely stored.
  • Report technical faults promptly.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including proper cleaning of probes and equipment between patients.
  • Refer patients requiring specialized imaging or further investigation to appropriate higher-level facilities.
  • Provide holistic physical, emotional, and spiritual support, including prayer where appropriate and welcomed.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and secure records of all ultrasound examinations.
  • Record patient details, clinical indications, findings, and relevant reports.
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly imaging statistics and reports.
  • Monitor stocks of ultrasound gel, printing paper, and other imaging consumables.
  • Participate in ordering and inventory checks.
  • Ensure secure storage and backup of ultrasound images and reports.
  • Restrict access to imaging records to authorized personnel.
  • Support ultrasound appointment scheduling.
  • Prioritize urgent and high-risk referrals appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with clinic policies, national health regulations, licensing requirements, and data protection standards.
  • Assist with inspections, audits, and visits by health authorities or partners.
Confidentiality & Data Protection
  • Treat every scan result, image, and clinical finding as strictly confidential.
  • Share patient information only with the patient, authorized clinical staff, or as required by law.
  • Handle sensitive findings with discretion, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Coordinate with the Clinical Officer when communicating difficult clinical findings.
  • Never disclose a patient’s scan findings, pregnancy status, or health information to unauthorized individuals.
  • Store ultrasound images, reports, and patient data securely.
  • Conduct scans and communicate findings in a private environment that protects patient dignity.
  • Immediately report accidental disclosure, confidentiality breaches, or loss of patient information to the Clinic Manager.
  • Maintain confidentiality both during and outside working hours and after employment ends.
Customer Care & Patient Experience
  • Welcome every patient with warmth, respect, dignity, and patience.
  • Explain ultrasound procedures clearly before and during examinations.
  • Communicate compassionately to reduce patient anxiety.
  • Maintain a calm and professional approach, especially when patients are anxious, in pain, or awaiting difficult news.
  • Handle sensitive information with empathy and discretion.
  • Ensure patients are appropriately connected with the Clinical Officer for further counselling and clinical management where necessary.
  • Manage appointments and waiting times fairly and efficiently.
  • Respond professionally to patient concerns and complaints.
  • Follow up appropriately with patients and the clinical team after complex or urgent findings.
  • Demonstrate Christ-like compassion and integrity in every patient interaction.
Collaborative & Team Duties
  • Work closely with Clinical Officers, midwives, nurses, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure imaging findings are communicated appropriately to support timely patient care.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement discussions.
  • Mentor and support junior staff or trainees in basic ultrasound principles where appropriate.
  • Engage with referral facilities and partner organizations to strengthen diagnostic referral pathways.
  • Participate in staff devotions, fellowships, and outreach initiatives.
Professional Development
  • Pursue continuous personal and professional development in sonography.
  • Attend relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions.
  • Maintain current licensing and professional certification.
  • Stay updated on sonography best practices, safety standards, and confidentiality requirements.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Clinic Manager or administration as required.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma or Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiography, or Medical Imaging Sciences from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the relevant Ugandan medical/allied health regulatory body.
  • Minimum 2 years of sonography experience.
  • Experience in obstetric and general abdominal ultrasound is preferred.
  • Experience in primary care, rural, or community health settings is an added advantage.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Obstetric ultrasound.
    • Gynecological ultrasound.
    • General abdominal ultrasound.
    • Common sonographic findings.
Technical Competencies
  • Proficiency in operating ultrasound equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot ultrasound equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic image interpretation and reporting skills.
  • Good knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
  • High level of discretion and trustworthiness when handling sensitive patient information.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong customer-care orientation.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and professionally.
  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure.
  • Ability to handle urgent and emotionally difficult situations professionally.
  • Basic computer literacy for imaging documentation, reporting, and record management.
  • Ability to create a safe, dignified, and confidential environment for patients.
