Job Description

Wildlife corridors are essential for biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, allow animals to move between
habitats, dispersal to promote gene flow, access to resources, and phenological migration. However,
their status and functionality are often threatened by human-induced land use change such as
commercial agriculture, linear infrastructure development and encroachment, and to a limited extent
natural processes (e.g., natural succession, flooding, landslides, volcanic eruptions).
Linking different Protected and Other Effectively Conserved Areas (OECMS) in the landscape are a
number of existing wildlife corridors and areas that have the potential to serve as wildlife corridors if
managed well (i.e. restored or better protected). Currently, the existing corridors are under threat, and
in some cases dysfunctional due to the increased human pressures namely settlements, agriculture and
linear infrastructure developments. These wildlife corridors are an important component of GVL
ecosystem and their protection is critical to the conservation of both endangered and threatened
wildlife species and their habitat. In the GVL, the wildlife corridors are critical in facilitating the
movement and dispersal of key species, particularly the elephants, lions and chimpanzees.
In the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area ( Uganda), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) together
with Uganda Wildlife Authority identified seven critical wildlife corridors in 2008
(https://uganda.wcs.org/DesktopModules/Bring2mind/DMX/API/Entries/Download?EntryId=16538&Po
rtalId=141&DownloadMethod=attachment), of which, four are in savanna areas and three in forests2
.
The current status of each of these corridors needs to be determined in the face of varying threats from
human activities, particularly land use change and other economic activities. A detailed assessment is
required to ascertain their functionality, threats and management challenges to inform the design and
implementation of management and conservation actions as part of the GVL Transboundary Strategic
action Plan (2024-2033) priorities.
In the GVL Transboundary Strategic Plan, activity 8 under Outcome 4.1 focuses on corridor management
and protection to ensure that they continue to play their cardinal role of facilitating wildlife species
movement and dispersal. It is against this background that WWF has secured funds to hire a consultant
to conduct a study to re-assess the status of the wildlife corridors in GVL in terms of physical condition,
presence and use by wildlife species, impacts of human activities and general functionality. The results
of the study will help GVL partners to design and implement interventions that secure, conserve and
restore the functionality of wildlife corridors in GVL.
Study Objectives
The main objective of the study is to assess the status and functional connectivity of wildlife corridors in
the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL) to guide GVL partners and stakeholders to design and implement
viable management and conservation actions.
The primary species of focus are Lions, Elephants and Chimpanzees.

WWF, on behalf of the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) and partners seeks a
consultant to undertake this study.
The consultant will;
i. Collate, review and analyze available relevant data to support the corridors study. This will
include biological, social, economic and governance data, including historical data on wildlife
movement and dispersal, with specific focus on lions, elephants and chimpanzees.
The review will specifically;
• Identify and profile available species biodiversity data associated with each corridor link
• Identify social and economic factors that affect the status of corridors for the named
species
• Identify governance types (public, IP&LCs, private or co-governed) within the
wildlife corridor being assessed
ii. Identify the threats to existing known corridors for the named species (Lions, Elephants and
Chimpanzees) and recommend mitigation measures
iii. Conduct a land cover land use analysis in the wildlife corridor areas to identify the available
suitable areas (core suitable areas) and those that require management interventions (reduce
resistance to movement) to guarantee functionality for Lions, Elephants and Chimpanzees.
iv. Conduct socioecological and habitat suitability modeling to identify the most feasible remaining
wildlife corridors for management and conservation in GVL with specific reference to elephants,
lions and chimpanzees.
v. Make recommendations on appropriate measures to enhance wildlife corridor management
and conservation the Conserved and Protected Areas, including OECMS.
vi. Regularly present and discuss study findings to GVL technical working groups/ teams, including
presentation of the final report. The meetings will be conducted virtually.
Deliverables/Expected Outputs
1. Inception Report explaining the Consultant’s general proposed approach, primary and secondary
data sources to be used during this work
2. Presentations of the Inception Report to the GVL Technical Working Group, including a clear
workplan on how the activities will be undertaken
3. Raw data sets accessed, analyzed
4. Geodatabases and Outputs (Maps) from spatial analyses
5. Workshop and meeting reports
6. Draft report in form of a publishable scientific paper
7. Final report in form of a publishable scientific paper
Timelines
The assignment will be undertaken in 45-man days in the Month of May and June. Any extensions to this
period shall be subject to approval by WWF Donor.

Applicants are required to submit;
8. A detailed technical proposal for conducting this work that clearly details the methodology/
approach, key personnel, work plan
9. A financial proposal or budget for conducting this work
10. List of similar work conducted by the consultant and references of organizations that you offered
the professional service
11. Resumes of key people to execute this work
Required Profile
The ideal consultant will have the following qualifications and competences;
a) Advanced degree in Ecology, Biological Sciences, Geospatial Sciences or any related field with
demonstrated experience in Conservation Planning
b) Geospatial Analysis experience including remote sensing skills
c) Knowledge and experience in use of species models and spatial planning
d) Interest in conservation issues, strategies and policy frameworks
e) Experience with multi partners programme coordination, meeting facilitation
f) Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
g) Fluency in English – other GVL language/s is an asset
Application Process & Contact Details
Interested candidates are required to submit a proposal with the following components:
