Company Description

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security. Founded in 1945 and headquartered in Rome, its primary mission is to achieve food security for all, ensuring that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. The organization operates under the strategic “Four Betters” framework: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.

In Uganda, where it has been a member since 1979, the FAO focuses on transforming agrifood systems to be more sustainable and inclusive. Current initiatives for 2025–2026 include strengthening the dairy sector, developing a digital agriculture strategy, and enhancing climate resilience through ecosystem restoration. Special attention is directed toward vulnerable regions like Karamoja, where projects support food production and resilience for both refugees and host communities.

The FAO’s management in Uganda involves close collaboration with various government ministries, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and international partners like the European Union and the World Bank. Through its “Hand-in-Hand” initiative, the organization identifies high-potential investment cases in value chains like maize, dairy, and beef to attract private sector financing and boost the national economy. By combining technical expertise with policy advice, the FAO aims to empower Ugandan youth and women while addressing environmental degradation and climate change
