Job Title: Assistant Accounting Manager

DelAgua is a social enterprise with more than a decade of experience implementing large-scale carbon development projects that transform the lives of rural households in least developed countries across Africa. Our Live Well programme uses carbon finance to fund the free provision of a high quality, fuel-efficient stove with integrated education and life-long support.
Today over 2 million stoves have been distributed, transforming over 9 million lives and delivering long-term behaviour change as well as multiple, measurable impacts for people and the environment. This is the largest clean cooking programme of its kind in the world with operations in Rwanda, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. DelAgua exclusively targets rural communities who are otherwise unable to afford the transition to clean cooking. Following this success, DelAgua is currently undergoing a significant expansion of our projects across sub-Saharan Africa, with the stated aim of increasing access to clean cooking for rural communities.
This employee will join DelAgua as Assistant Accounting Manager under the direction of the Country Representative and Group Accountant. This employee will be responsible for the careful management of DelAgua Uganda company accounts and ensuring compliance with tax authorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process supplier payments in accordance with agreed payment terms and internal approval workflows.
- Ensure all payment processes take place within the control environment and oversee filing system for monthly expenditures.
- Maintain DelAgua Uganda bank accounts: reconcile monthly bank statements with the general ledger, liaise with Bank Accounts Manager to investigate any discrepancies, and monitor all transactions via GAPS.
- Identify and recommend improvements to the internal control environment to enhance financial governance and operational efficiency.
- Evaluate and consider relevant improvements to the control environment.
- Led on and manage annual company external audit process
- Develop and oversee annual budgets in close collaboration with the Operations team
- Manage all payroll responsibilities including assisting on human resources and administrative duties, subject to review by the senior management. These include:
- Monthly staff payroll and PAYE payments.
- Statutory social security contributions in accordance with Ugandan
- Tracking all records of annual leave, compensatory time off and sick leave.
- Ensuring medical insurance for current staff is up to date.
- Support DelAgua’s revenue diversification strategy by ensuring accurate and timely cash collection and establishing robust controls for revenue recognition in line with applicable accounting standards
- Report to and maintain regular dialogue with the global and in-country finance teams to ensure consistency of financial controls, procedures and reporting standards across all payment processes.
- Maintain accurate and complete financial records and participate in audits when required.
- Ensure accurate account coding and proper classification of transactions to maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
- Engage with the Company’s financial auditors to ensure a timely annual financial audit.
- Undertake any other duties, as and when reasonably required by the Company.
Qualifications & Skills:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a finance-related role.
- Ideally holds or is currently pursuing, a professional accounting qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA, or equivalent), though not essential.
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field)
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills in English, with the ability to present financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and manage competing priorities while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Experience working with local government authorities and regulatory bodies.
- Proven ability to deliver accurate work to strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously without compromising accuracy or quality.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing a small team.
