Company Description
Integrated Seed and Sector Development (ISSD) Uganda is a prominent non-governmental organization dedicated to developing a vibrant, pluralistic, and market-oriented seed sector in the country. Since its inception, the organization has focused on bridging the gap between informal seed systems used by smallholder farmers and the formal, regulated seed industry. By promoting the “Integrated Seed System” approach, ISSD Uganda works to ensure that farmers have reliable access to high-quality, diverse, and affordable seeds that are well-suited to local environmental conditions.
The organization is well-regarded for its work in establishing and supporting Local Seed Businesses (LSBs), which are farmer-led enterprises that produce and market quality-declared seeds within their own communities. This decentralized model is particularly effective in reaching remote areas where large commercial seed companies may not operate. Through technical training in seed production, business management, and quality control, ISSD Uganda empowers rural farming groups to become self-sufficient suppliers of essential food crops such as beans, maize, and various indigenous vegetables.
Beyond grassroots support, ISSD Uganda plays a strategic role in policy advocacy and institutional strengthening within the broader agricultural sector. The organization collaborates closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, as well as national research bodies like the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). By facilitating dialogue between government regulators, private seed companies, and small-scale producers, the organization helps to create a more transparent and supportive environment for seed innovations, ultimately contributing to national food security and poverty reduction.
