Company Description
The Refugee Law Project (RLP) is a specialized community-based organization and an autonomous outreach project of the School of Law at Makerere University. Established in 1999, its primary mission is to ensure that all forced migrants—including refugees, internally displaced persons, and victims of post-conflict trauma—enjoy their full human rights as defined by Ugandan and international law. Operating from its headquarters in Kampala and various field offices in major refugee-hosting districts, the project bridges the gap between legal theory and the practical realities faced by those seeking asylum.
The organization is well-regarded for its holistic approach to justice, providing a wide range of services that go beyond traditional legal representation. This includes mental health and psychosocial support for survivors of conflict-related violence, as well as specialized programs for victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The RLP also plays a critical role in language empowerment, offering English for Adult Learners (EAL) classes to help refugees navigate the Ugandan social and economic landscape, thereby fostering better integration and self-reliance within their host communities.
Beyond direct service delivery, the Refugee Law Project is a leading voice in policy advocacy and research regarding forced migration in East Africa. The project frequently engages with the government, the Office of the Prime Minister, and international agencies to influence the development of more humane and effective refugee policies. By documenting the lived experiences of migrants through film, reports, and academic research, the organization aims to challenge stereotypes and promote a deeper public understanding of the root causes and consequences of displacement.
