Company Description
Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) is a leading agro-industrial enterprise in Uganda and a core member of the Mehta Group. Established in 1924, it was the first sugar factory in the country and is located in Lugazi, Buikwe District, approximately 45 kilometres east of Kampala. The corporation operates a massive estate consisting of thousands of hectares of sugarcane plantations alongside a modern processing plant, playing a vital role in the national economy by contributing significantly to domestic sugar production and industrial growth.
The company follows a vertically integrated production model, managing everything from the cultivation of sugarcane to the final packaging and distribution of refined sugar. SCOUL is well known for its flagship brand, “Lugazi Sugar,” which is a staple in households and food industries across the region. In addition to sugar production, the facility has diversified into green energy by utilizing bagasse—a fibrous byproduct of sugarcane—to generate electricity through a co-generation plant. This power is used to run the factory, with the surplus often exported to the national grid, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainable industrial practices.
As a major employer, SCOUL provides livelihoods for thousands of direct employees and supports a vast network of out-grower farmers who supply additional cane to the factory. The corporation is also deeply involved in social welfare, maintaining its own schools, housing units, and a specialized hospital to serve its workforce and the surrounding community. Despite historical environmental debates regarding its proximity to the Mabira Forest, the company continues to focus on modernization and yield improvement to meet the increasing demand for sugar in the East African Community.
