Company Description
The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) is a cabinet-level government body in Uganda mandated to empower communities, promote culture, and ensure the protection of vulnerable populations. It serves as the primary agency for coordinating social interventions aimed at reducing poverty and inequality across the country. Headquartered at the Simbamanyo House in Kampala, the ministry oversees a broad range of sectors including youth, women, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the labour force.
A major focus of the ministry is the implementation of the National Social Protection Strategy, which includes the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE). This program provides regular cash transfers to senior citizens to improve their quality of life and financial security. Additionally, the ministry is the lead implementer of the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) and the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), both of which provide interest-free revolving funds to help marginalized groups start small businesses and achieve economic self-reliance.
In the realm of labour and employment, the ministry is responsible for regulating industrial relations, ensuring workplace safety, and managing the externalization of labour. It works to protect the rights of Ugandan workers both domestically and abroad by vetting recruitment agencies and negotiating bilateral labour agreements with host countries. The ministry also plays a vital role in preserving Ugandan heritage and promoting traditional leadership through the oversight of cultural institutions and the administration of the National Cultural Centre.
