Company Description
Environmental Alert (EA) is a prominent Ugandan non-governmental organization founded in 1988 to address the intersection of environmental degradation, food security, and poverty. Over more than three decades, it has evolved from a small grassroots initiative into a leading national player in environmental governance and policy advocacy. Headquartered in Kabalagala, Kampala, EA acts as a central coordinating body for several civil society networks, ensuring that the voices of local communities are represented in national and regional environmental decision-making.
As of early 2026, the organization is operating under an ambitious new ten-year strategic plan that focuses on scaling up climate resilience across Uganda. EA is particularly well-known for its leadership in the forestry and renewable energy sectors, where it hosts secretariats for major platforms like the Uganda Forestry Working Group. Recently, the organization has been heavily involved in national reforestation campaigns and has signed strategic partnerships with the Ugandan Parliament to ensure that climate change policies are backed by practical, community-driven data and scientific research.
The organization’s work extends beyond the capital through various field projects in disaster-prone regions, such as the Rwenzori sub-region. Here, EA implements integrated programs that combine climate-smart agriculture with improved access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). By training farmers in sustainable land-use practices and providing schools with renewable energy solutions, Environmental Alert helps vulnerable populations adapt to the increasing frequency of floods and landslides while simultaneously improving their household incomes and health outcomes.
- Network Coordination: Managing the secretariats for the Environment and Natural Resources Civil Society Network and the Renewable Energy CSO Network to unify advocacy efforts.
- Climate-Smart Agriculture: Promoting indigenous knowledge and modern sustainable techniques to help smallholder farmers increase yields while protecting the soil and local biodiversity.
- Policy Advocacy: Engaging with government ministries and parliament to influence legislation on land use, wetland conservation, and forest management.
- WASH and Health Integration: Constructing solar-powered water systems and sanitation facilities in rural schools and health centers to build resilience against climate-induced water shortages.
- Natural Resource Management: Facilitating community-based forest management and promoting the use of energy-efficient cookstoves to reduce the dependency on biomass.
