Company Description

McDermott International, Ltd is a premier, fully-integrated global provider of technology, engineering, and construction solutions to the energy industry. Operating in over 54 countries with a workforce of approximately 40,000 employees, the Houston-headquartered company designs and builds complex infrastructure solutions. Its core operational philosophy—the “One McDermott Way”—focuses on delivering certainty, innovation, and digital data solutions to responsibly transport and transform traditional and renewable energy sources.
In East Africa, McDermott Uganda Limited operates as a critical driver of the country’s oil and gas sector through its major base in the Albertine region. The company entered a joint venture consortium with Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation to execute a mega-scale, multi-billion-dollar contract for TotalEnergies E&P Uganda. This strategic corporate alignment places McDermott at the forefront of engineering, procurement, supply, construction, and commissioning (EPSCC) for the country’s flagship upstream oil fields.
The primary focus of McDermott’s Ugandan operations is the development of the Tilenga Upstream Facilities Project located in the Buliisa and Nwoya districts. McDermott’s technical teams are responsible for erecting surface facilities, buried flowlines, and a massive Central Processing Facility (CPF) designed to process up to 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Operating out of Kasenyi Village in Buliisa, the firm manages thousands of personnel, enforces strict health and safety protocols, and adheres to stringent national regulatory standards.
The specific infrastructure components, local initiatives, and specialized engineering roles managed by the company in Uganda include:
  • Central Processing Facility (CPF): The core industrial hub engineered to process, separate, and clean heavy, waxy crude oil from surrounding well pads. [
  • Buried Flowline Networks: Over 170 kilometers of specialized, subterranean pipelines built to channel raw petroleum from fields safely to the CPF.
  • National Local Content Vetting: Actively engages, screens, and contracts registered Ugandan suppliers and subcontractors to maximize regional commercial growth.
  • Advanced Commissioning Teams: Deploys localized technical specialists across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and telecommunications disciplines.
  • Integrated Site Logistics: Partners with external camp services firms to provide catering, security, and medical support for up to 3,500 onsite workers.
