Company Description
Kilimo Trust is an independent, regional non-for-profit agricultural development organization operating across the East African Community. Founded in 2005, the trust maintains its regional headquarters at Plot 42 Princess Anne Drive in Bugolobi, Kampala, Uganda. It has expanded its institutional reach by establishing operational subsidiaries and country offices in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi to drive inclusive and sustainable market-led agricultural value chain development.
The primary focus of the organization is to transform agribusiness into an effective tool for wealth creation, food availability, and nutrition security. Led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Birungi Korutaro, the trust works directly with smallholder farmers, aggregators, processors, and cross-border traders. Under its strategic framework, the organization aims to directly impact over 1.4 million smallholder farmers, helping vulnerable rural populations transition from subsistence farming to commercial participation.
To build long-term economic resilience, the entity implements a broad variety of climate-smart agricultural frameworks and youth empowerment programs across the region. The trust coordinates heavily with international funders like the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the European Commission, and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa. Its interventions focus on introducing mechanical tools, deploying localized village-based advisors, and establishing rural processing facilities to reduce post-harvest resource losses.
The specialized regional projects, eco-friendly farming systems, and commercial value-chain interventions managed by the trust include:
- Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Rice Initiative: Deploys sustainable, climate-smart innovations in Kenya and Uganda to optimize rice by-products and reduce environmental wetland degradation.
- Kungahara Nutrition Project: Renovates and expands crowded community market centers in Western Rwanda to improve safe working spaces and sanitation for women vendors.
- Enhancing Access to Markets: Coordinates with regional consortium partners in Eastern Uganda to minimize post-harvest grain losses and improve structured financing tools.
- Sustainable Rice Initiative: Drives focused production expansion, advanced soil health tracking, and commercial market access across key counties in Kenya.
- Power for Food Partnership: Promotes the integration of clean renewable energy systems into dairy processing, food preservation, and rural agricultural distribution hubs.
- Technical and Vocational Training: Equips hundreds of young people with practical agronomic skills in irrigation maintenance, mechanization, and food safety. [
