Job Description

The incumbent will be responsible to the Assistant Commissioner – Weather Forecasting Services for performing the following duties:-
– Supervising major meteorological units and data collecting centers and ensuring timely receipt and archival of Weather and Climate data;
– Coordinating development and periodic review of technical procedures for preparation and issuance of routine meteorological data, reports, and information needed for meteorological services;
– Managing timely issuance of weather and climate forecasts and other relevant meteorological information for different stakeholders;
– Ensuring that the meteorological offices maintain the quality of meteorological information and services provided;
– Identifying partnerships with various organizations for resource mobilization, public education and outreach;
– Developing, evaluating and improving meteorological and hydro meteorological, agro-meteorological and bio-meteorological forecasting models and techniques;
– Coordinating, monitoring and issuing Early Warnings alerts and advisories on adverse weather phenomena;
– Carrying out research in climate variability, climate change, interaction of weather with humans, plants, soils, livestock and environment;
– Designing and conducting regular maintenance of suitable computer programs for data processing;
– Identifying suitable software packages for meteorological data management including processing, archival and retrieval;
– Supervising and appraising staff;
– Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

The incumbent will be responsible to the Principal Meteorologist for performing the following duties:-
– Preparing weather and climate forecasts and other relevant meteorological information for various stakeholders;
– Developing and reviewing technical procedures for preparation and issuance of meteorological data, reports, information and services provided for aeronautical meteorological services;
– Supervising preparation of quality climatology summaries, reports and tables;
– Providing meteorological products and services at a high level of professional competence;
– Receiving and archiving data from rainfall, climatology, agro meteorological, synoptic and other atmospheric monitoring stations;
– Developing and testing computer programs for proper operations;
– Coordinating with other Agencies in environmental, weather and climate awareness campaigns through the media, seminars and workshops;
– Keeping abreast with and identifying suitable meteorological instruments, equipment, software for data processing and management;
– Processing, analyzing and generating quality statistical summaries, publishing relevant weather bulletins and preparing suitable training materials;
– Inspecting synoptic and climatological stations and taking action on their requirements;
– Conducting and supervising research in Meteorology and Allied Sciences;
– Supervising and appraising staff.
– Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
