Company Description
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is a prominent, vibrant consortium of over 175 member universities spanning 40 African countries. Established in 2004 by ten African Vice-Chancellors, the organization functions as an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). Its central coordinating Secretariat is hosted within the main campus of Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
The network operates with a vision to transform higher education systems to catalyze inclusive, sustainable agricultural development across Africa. By driving structural improvements in Higher Agricultural Education (HAE), the body aligns its core activities with continental frameworks like Africa’s Agenda 2063. It designs and funds strategic academic interventions that purposefully link top-performing university researchers directly to the needs of smallholder farmers.
Through key international alliances—such as its flagship partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the TAGDev 2.0 Project—the organization actively builds human capital. It specifically targets young women, refugees, and marginalized demographics to equip them with advanced agribusiness and technology skills. These interconnected projects aim to convert traditional university research into viable, real-world commercial solutions that address food insecurity, rural poverty, and regional climate adaptation.
The standard institutional services, developmental projects, and knowledge products offered by the RUFORUM Network include:
- Academic Scholarship Programs: Financial funding for prioritizing early- and mid-career students in BSc, MSc, and PhD disciplines like Agronomy, Biosystems Engineering, and Data Science.
- Competitive Research Grants: Technical financing awarded to faculty members and postgraduate students to execute impact-oriented agricultural field research.
- TAGDev Initiatives: Collaborative, youth-centric educational campaigns focused on entrepreneurship development and the commercialization of academic innovations.
- Institutional Capacity Building: Tailored curriculum-review advisory services that help regional Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions implement competence-based agricultural learning.
- The RUFORUM eLearning Platform (REP): Digital hosting and management of specialized multi-lingual short courses, including Disaster Risk Management in Crop Production.
- Scientific Convenings and AGMs: Organization of high-level continental policy dialogues, scientific forums, and annual general meetings for agricultural stakeholder networking.
