Company Description
The Uganda Cancer Society (UCS) is a nationwide, community-based umbrella organization founded to coordinate all civil society organizations and institutional actors involved in the fight against cancer in Uganda. Established to unify disjointed anti-cancer campaigns, the non-profit platform represents over 40 distinct member organizations, ranging from medical care centers to community action groups. The corporate headquarters of the society’s central secretariat is strategically located along Upper Mulago Hill Road on Mulago Hill in Kampala, ensuring close proximity to national referral networks.
The primary mission of the society is to minimize the socio-economic burden and mortality rate associated with prevalent malignancies like cervical, breast, and prostate cancers across East Africa. Operating on a policy-driven framework, the entity builds institutional alliances to advocate for the prioritization of comprehensive oncology services within the Uganda National Cancer Control Plan. By serving as a collective voice, the society drives national policy, creates public awareness campaigns, and pools healthcare resources to bridge substantial gaps in public oncology diagnostics.
A significant focus of the organization involves mitigating the severe infrastructural barriers that remote, vulnerable cancer patients face while seeking treatment in centralized cities like Kampala. Through its interconnected network, the coalition collaborates with specialized charitable establishments—such as the Bless a Child Foundation and New Hope Children’s Hostel—to secure essential humanitarian relief. By generating strategic funding partnerships with corporate entities like the Uganda Rotary Cancer Programme, UCS systematically supplies daily meals, hygienic tools, and financial assistance to regional patient care hubs. [
The essential patient welfare programs, public advocacy campaigns, and healthcare services coordinated by the Uganda Cancer Society include: [
- Patient Hostel Management: Facilitating free intermediate residential accommodation, structured daily meals, and basic first-aid for rural patients undergoing extensive outpatient clinical therapies.
- National Screening Services: Organizing mobile community screening drives for early cancer detection in collaboration with specialized clinical centers. [
- Psychosocial Counseling: Providing specialized peer-led emotional support and professional counseling networks driven by trained oncology experts and cancer survivors. [
- Patient Transport Services: Provision of coordinated medical transit shuttles to move high-risk patients securely between localized charity hostels and central radiotherapy units.
- Survivor Support Programs: Deploying community reintegration toolkits and vocational economic workshops to help cancer survivors safely resume self-sufficient productivity.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Orchestrating community dialogues, educational teleclubs, and city-wide awareness marches like the International Childhood Cancer Day commemorations.
