Company Description
Kyamuhunga Peoples Co-operative Savings and Credit Society Limited (KYAPS) is a prominent member-owned financial institution operating in the Western Region of Uganda. Established on December 28, 1998, it originally began as a company limited by guarantee under a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Government of Uganda private sector initiative. To better intermediate local savings and maximize community governance, its structure was formally reviewed and changed into a Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (SACCO) in 2003, subsequently gaining registration with the Registrar of Co-operatives under certificate number 7053.
The tier-four community financial institution coordinates its vast regional network from its centralized Head Offices and Main Branch situated in Butare Town Council, Moroto-Kasese highway axis within Bushenyi District. Catering extensively to urban, peri-urban, and rural populations across the Greater Ankole sub-region, KYAPS operates full-service branches and service centres in key municipalities. Its footprint spans across multiple service outlets including dedicated branches in Ishaka Town, Katerera (Rubirizi District), Rutookye (Mitooma District), Rubaare (Ntungamo District), Kashenshero, and Kanungu.
The primary business model of the cooperative focuses on driving local wealth accumulation by offering affordable credit lines and structured deposit portfolios. KYAPS offers highly competitive monthly loan interest rates ranging dynamically between 1.83% and 2.5%, supporting micro-entrepreneurs with business loans, agricultural credit, Boda Boda financing, school fees loans, and home improvement financing. On the savings side, the institution provides tailored accounts such as the standard KYAPS Save, the commercial KYAPS BIZ account, the Abato Savers account for children, fixed deposits, and custom collection portals for local schools and hospitals.
To maintain an edge over traditional microfinance entities, the cooperative aggressively deploys modern fintech systems alongside deep-rooted community appreciation frameworks. It operates the proprietary KYAPS Mobile application to facilitate hassle-free digital banking and integrates agency banking platforms to transact seamlessly on behalf of mainstream commercial banks. Guided by cooperative norms, the SACCO hosts high-profile Annual General Meetings (AGMs) where its board outlines surplus growth—such as generating over Shs 1.6 billion in annual profits—and manages the signature “Ekihuuro Ky’omwaka” end-of-year rewards scheme to give back financial returns directly to its thousands of members
