Company Description
Kijani Forestry Limited is a fast-growing social enterprise and sustainable agroforestry company in Uganda. Founded in 2018 to combat severe deforestation, extreme poverty, and the regional biomass energy crisis, the registered B-Corp operates as one of the largest employers in Northern Uganda. The company’s corporate operations and primary seedling infrastructure are centered at Plot 75/79 Jomo Kenyatta Road in Gulu City, with secondary specialized field complexes along the Gulu–Arua Road axis in Anaka.
The core operating model of the enterprise relies on a market-driven decentralization mechanism known as the Nursery Hub Model. Instead of managing isolated commercial plantations, Kijani Forestry partners directly with rural smallholder farmers by establishing village-level nurseries. The company provides free, high-quality tree seedlings—spanning fast-growing indigenous fuelwood, timber, fodder, and fruit varieties—alongside comprehensive agronomic training. Crucially, they offer a guaranteed buy-back program that enables farmers to safely cultivate degraded lands without upfront costs, creating a clear pathway to quadruple their per-acre incomes.
A major strategic focus for the company is mitigating the structural root cause of regional deforestation: the overwhelming national demand for household cooking fuel. Rather than enforcing impractical bans on cooking fuel, Kijani advocates for the deliberate farming of fast-growing biomass specifically designated for sustainable, renewable charcoal and timber harvesting. To expand their conservation footprint and formalize this economy, the firm has actively engaged with Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to secure legal clearance for commercialized, sustainable charcoal production loops across the country.
The scale of Kijani’s ecological and socio-economic impact has grown exponentially over its operating lifespan. Since 2019, the organization has successfully planted over 17 million trees, sustained hundreds of direct jobs, and integrated more than 57,000 smallholder farmers into its agroforestry supply chains. Backed by structured carbon asset monetization and real-time field tracking via the custom Kijani Field App, the firm has scaled up its regional targets. Their long-term framework focuses on engaging over 65,000 farmers to plant 30 million trees across five Ugandan sub-regions, including Acholi, Lango, Karamoja, and Bunyoro
