Company Description
Kabukye Trust is a specialized, community-based healthcare charity operating in rural Uganda to transform the management of severe chronic conditions. The organization was sparked in August 2010 during an olwekobhano (community reflection meeting) where 67 residents confronted issues of local neglect and deep poverty. Formally founded in 2011 by local leaders including Allan Kiwanuka and Dr. David Kazungu, the trust takes its name from Kabukye village in the Kamuli District of the Busoga sub-region, derived from the Lusoga phrase meaning “let it dawn”. Its headquarters are located in Bwambala Village, Busota Ward within Kamuli Municipality.
The primary operational mandate of the trust centers on identifying, tracking, and treating three historically marginalized medical conditions: Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), Sickle Cell Disease, and Leprosy. To bridge the survival gap in remote villages, Kabukye Trust utilizes a dual-layered execution framework consisting of a community-based navigation network and specialized healthcare stabilization facilities. Dedicated community navigators proactively map out missing patients, trace close contacts, and establish peer support groups to ensure vulnerable individuals are never permanently lost to the healthcare grid.
The organization directly addresses systemic rural healthcare gaps through its network of Bright Life Medical Centres, built on land donated by its late co-founder Dr. Kazungu. These specialized, community-integrated facilities serve as critical referral and stabilization hubs designed to manage complex medical emergencies that standard district-level health units lack the equipment or expertise to treat. Additionally, the centers strengthen public health infrastructure by securing high-quality chronic disease medicines, running specialist clinical reviews, and conducting routine training to rebuild diagnostic skills among public health personnel.
Through targeted international alliances and regional funding, the charity has successfully scaled its clinical impact beyond its founding district. Supported by grants like the T1D Community Fund, its flagship Sugarwise Starlets diabetes screening program has expanded across neighboring territories like Buyende and Luuka. On the policy front, the trust acts as a prominent national coordinator, leading the 17-partner ALIGN-T1D Consortium alongside Breakthrough T1D and the Helmsley Charitable Trust to integrate universal, government-led Type 1 Diabetes care blueprints directly into Uganda’s national health system.
