Alight (formerly known as the American Refugee Committee – ARC) is a prominent international non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance and sustainable development solutions to refugees, internally displaced persons, and vulnerable host communities. Originally founded in 1979 in response to the Cambodian refugee crisis, the organization underwent a major global rebranding in 2019. This strategic name change was done in direct solidarity with the people they serve, deliberately dropping the restrictive label of “refugee” to emphasize human dignity, hidden potential, and a collaborative, human-centered design approach to aid.
In Uganda, Alight Uganda serves as a critical frontline partner to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Ugandan government in managing the country’s massive refugee influx. Operating extensively across six major refugee settlements—including Nakivale, Kyangwali, and Oruchinga—as well as multiple border transit centers, the organization provides rapid, life-saving interventions. Their field teams manage core infrastructure and service delivery, focusing heavily on legal and physical protection services, mental health support, and critical Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs.
A distinguishing feature of Alight’s operational philosophy is its commitment to fostering economic independence rather than long-term aid dependency. Through integrated livelihood training programs, the organization equips displaced individuals with practical vocational skills and small-business micro-loans. Notable grassroots innovations in Uganda include their Safe Ride initiative, which transforms local motorcycle taxis (boda bodas) into trusted, self-sustaining income streams for refugee youths, and Future Ground, a modern technology hub designed to build digital literacy, networking, and employment pathways for young adults graduating into independent adulthood.
To support its multi-sectoral field operations, Alight maintains its primary national coordinating headquarters in Kampala, alongside localized sub-offices in rural hosting districts like Kisoro. The organization is a major employer of local humanitarian professionals, social workers, and procurement officers within Uganda’s development sector. By actively involving village health teams, local authorities, and refugee-led neighborhood committees in the co-creation of their relief projects, Alight ensures that its structural interventions remain highly durable, culturally respectful, and locally sustained.
