Company Description
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is the official armed forces of the Republic of Uganda. Originally established as a guerrilla army known as the National Resistance Army (NRA), it captured power in 1986 following a five-year liberation struggle. It was officially renamed and reconstituted as the UPDF under Article 208 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.
The primary mandate of the force is to preserve and defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Uganda. According to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA), the military is divided into four distinct service branches: the Land Forces, the Air Force, the Special Forces Command (SFC), and the Reserve Forces. It operates as a professional, non-partisan national institution subordinate to civilian authority.
The President of Uganda, H.E. Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The professional and operational administration of the entire military structure is led by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), a position currently held by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The administrative headquarters of the military are situated at Mbuya Hill in Kampala.
Beyond national defense, the UPDF plays an active role in regional peace support operations, pan-African stabilization efforts, and local infrastructure projects. It regularly deploys troops under regional mandates to conflict zones within East Africa and the Horn of Africa, most notably to Somalia. Nationally, the force coordinates with civil authorities during emergencies and drives economic productivity through its commercial wing, the National Enterprise Corporation.
