MIFUMI is an international non-governmental women’s rights organization and registered charity operating at the grassroots level in Uganda. Established in 1997, it began as a locally grown initiative to support health and education in Mifumi village in Eastern Uganda. It has since expanded significantly into the largest grassroots agency in the country dedicated to protecting women and children from gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic abuse.
The organization operates under a multi-pronged approach that blends protection, prevention, and essential service provision. According to the MIFUMI Official Platform, the agency manages purpose-built safe refuges, advice centers, and a national toll-free violence and abuse helpline (0800 200 250). By working alongside local law enforcement, sub-county chiefs, and the judiciary, they provide survivors with immediate legal support, safe housing, and confidential advisory services.
MIFUMI is globally recognized for its pioneering advocacy campaigns against harmful cultural practices that fuel domestic conflicts. It famously led a landmark constitutional petition in the Supreme Court of Uganda, which successfully ruled the traditional custom of demanding a refund of a bride price upon the dissolution of a customary marriage unconstitutional. The agency actively engages communities to challenge deep-rooted social norms surrounding polygamy, child marriage, and economic abuse.
The organization maintains its core administrative operational base on Masaba Road in Tororo District, with a strategic regional office located on Martyrs’ Drive in Ntinda, Kampala. Through grassroots community advocacy models, the group empowers rural women to achieve justice, long-term economic security, and personal confidence. Their ongoing efforts continue to play a vital role in shaping national gender policies and safeguarding human rights across Sub-Saharan Africa.
