Company Description
The International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global faith-based human rights organisation dedicated to protecting vulnerable people living in poverty from systemic violence, human trafficking, and modern-day slavery. Founded in 1997 by human rights attorney Gary Haugen in Washington, D.C., the non-profit enterprise operates on a global scale across multiple countries. In Uganda, the organisation’s country office is located at 13c Suuna Road in Kampala, serving as the coordination hub for its extensive regional interventions.
The primary mission of the institution is structured around four core operational pillars: rescuing victims, holding criminals accountable, restoring survivors, and strengthening local justice systems. By working alongside law enforcement, prosecutors, and magistrates, they systematically remove the impunity that allows perpetrators to thrive. Operationally, the firm utilises an intensive “Collaborative Casework” model, which involves taking specific, real-world cases of abuse through local court systems to demonstrate that public laws can protect everyone equally.Â
In its Ugandan operations, IJM focuses heavily on combating gender-based violence (GBV), child sexual exploitation, and property grabbing from widows and orphans. Their specialized teams support vulnerable families in areas such as Mukono County, Amuru, Gulu, Kabarole, and Kamwenge Districts. Notably, the organisation’s targeted capacity-building partnerships with the Uganda Police Force helped establish specialized land theft prevention units, leading to a dramatic 50% reduction in illegal land displacement within targeted project areas.Â
To ensure long-term, structural transformation, the agency champions systemic legal reforms and trauma-informed survivor care. They provide extensive trauma counselling, legal advocacy, and financial rehabilitation tools to help victims transition into thriving independent citizens. Through strategic partnerships—such as a landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed directly with the Judiciary of Uganda—the entity continually reshapes criminal justice protocols to create a safe and equitable environment for all.
