Job Description

Job Purpose

To drive and maintain Local Government vehicles in accordance with the approved transport policy, traffic regulations, and instructions of the supervising officer, while ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning of the vehicle.

  • Local Government vehicles driven safely and efficiently as assigned.
  • Vehicles cleaned and maintained in good working condition.
  • Minor vehicle maintenance and repairs carried out as required.
  • Major mechanical and technical faults promptly identified and reported.
  • Basic vehicle records accurately maintained.
  • Vehicles safely kept and secured when not in use.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • Drive Local Government vehicles safely and responsibly while undertaking official duties and assignments.
  • Transport officers, staff, documents, equipment, and other authorized items as directed.
  • Carry out routine checks on the vehicle before and after use to ensure roadworthiness and safety.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of the assigned vehicle.
  • Carry out basic vehicle maintenance and minor repairs within the limits of personal competence.
  • Identify and promptly report major mechanical, electrical, or technical faults to the supervising officer.
  • Maintain basic vehicle records, including mileage, fuel consumption, servicing, repairs, and other records as instructed.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is properly parked, secured, and safeguarded when not in use.
  • Observe all relevant traffic laws, regulations, and Local Government transport policies.
  • Report accidents, breakdowns, damage, or other incidents involving the vehicle to the supervising officer without delay.
  • Ensure that the vehicle has the required documentation and basic safety equipment before undertaking assignments.
  • Exercise care and responsibility for the vehicle, its passengers, and any property being transported.
  • Perform any other duties related to the position as may be assigned by the supervising officer.

Person Specifications

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with a pass in English Language.
  • Valid Driving Permit of Class C or D.

Competencies and Skills

  • Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics and maintenance.
  • Good driving skills and a clean driving record.
  • Good public relations and customer care skills.
  • Good time management and ability to adhere to schedules.
  • Flexibility and ability to respond appropriately to changing assignments.
  • Ability to exercise care, responsibility, and sound judgement while driving.
  • Ability to maintain accurate basic vehicle records.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and observance of road safety and traffic regulations.
