Company Description
Girls for Climate Action (G4CA) is a prominent youth-led eco-feminist non-profit organisation and grassroots movement based in Jinja, Uganda. Co-founded by ardent climate justice advocate Joanita Babirye, the movement works to amplify the voices of young women and adolescent girls. It focuses heavily on placing vulnerable and marginalized female populations at the forefront of regional climate change adaptation and policy-making decisions across East Africa.
The organisation’s primary mission centers around building climate knowledge, leadership confidence, and sustainable livelihoods for women and girls. They address the disproportionate impacts of environmental degradation on female populations by offering specialized training tracks. Their flagship initiatives include the “Climate Resilience Program” for grassroots communities, the “Green Master Program” in local schools, and the “Climate Cops Fellowship Program” to equip young leaders with policy and advocacy tools.
Operationally, the movement manages five active climate demonstration hubs that function as localized technical innovation spaces. At their education hub outside Jinja, they teach practical, eco-friendly skills like constructing energy-efficient cookstoves, creating biodegradable waste briquettes as an alternative to firewood, and setting up biogas digesters or rainwater harvesting pans. To promote green entrepreneurship (or “greenpreneurship”), the group has launched sustainable community business products, such as their organic avocado hair oil brand, Avofors.
Beyond hands-on technical training, G4CA drives aggressive policy advocacy, eco-feminist campaigns, and ecological restoration projects. Their advocates have spearheaded large-scale environmental movements, including the restoration of the Butamira forest in Jinja, protesting copper mining risks in Kasese, and developing a countrywide Eco-Feminist Manifesto.
