Company Description

Saferworld is an independent, not-for-profit international peacebuilding organization dedicated to preventing violent conflict and building safer lives. Founded in 1989 in Bristol, UK, and currently headquartered in London, the organization operates in nearly 20 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It places a strong emphasis on a people-centered approach, prioritizing the safety, security, and human rights of populations directly affected by conflict.
The organization originally began as a politically independent research body focusing on effective arms control. In the 1990s, it pioneered crucial research that contributed to global frameworks like the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). Over time, Saferworld expanded its mandate beyond weapons tracking to investigate the structural drivers of violence, including poor governance, systemic marginalization, economic inequality, and competition over scarce natural resources.
Saferworld actively works to address conflict drivers through grassroots programming and policy advocacy. The NGO partners with local civil society actors to create early warning systems, facilitate community dialogues, and resolve long-standing local disputes, such as cross-border rangeland management friction or resource-driven water conflicts. By elevating grassroots evidence to national and international policy arenas, they actively reshape how global institutions approach defense, security, and peacebuilding.
In Uganda, Saferworld has maintained an active presence since 2001, operating out of a national office in Kampala alongside field outposts in Gulu and Moroto. The organization’s regional focus centers on mitigating threats to stability across the West Nile, Northern, Central, and Karamoja regions. Their local efforts specialize in promoting transparent land governance, conflict-sensitive oil and mineral extraction, and dismantling harmful gender norms that trigger violence. [
