Company Description
WaterAid is a premier international non-governmental organization dedicated exclusively to transforming lives by improving access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene (WASH). Established in 1981 in the United Kingdom as a direct response to the United Nations International Drinking Water Decade, the global federation now operates across approximately 30 countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and South America. The organization views universal access to safe water and sanitation not merely as an infrastructural goal, but as a fundamental human right essential for health, education, and poverty eradication.
In the local context, WaterAid Uganda has been an active, driving force in the sector since 1982. Operating out of its country headquarters on Luthuli Avenue in Bugolobi, Kampala, the non-profit addresses severe gaps where approximately 18.5 million citizens lack clean water close to home and 38 million lack decent private toilets. Managed under the current leadership of Country Director Dr. Joyce Mpalanyi Magala, WaterAid Uganda collaborates heavily with national and local authorities to build institutional capacity, helping the nation work toward its overarching Vision 2040 and UN Sustainable Development Goal 6.
Operationally, the entity has shifted its focus from basic direct service delivery toward sustainable systems strengthening, advocacy, and policy influencing. Through its ambitious Country Programme Strategy (2023–2028), WaterAid Uganda concentrates on two vital pillars: integrating high-quality WASH services into public healthcare facilities and schools, and constructing climate-resilient water infrastructure to protect marginalized communities from drought and environmental shock. Its programmatic reaches target vulnerable populations—particularly women and girls—via menstrual health management (MHM) campaigns and specialized maternal health interventions in centers like Katabi Health Centre III.
Financially and logistically, WaterAid relies on robust networks of global donors, corporate entities, and international development alliances. In Uganda, the organization actively executes multi-district projects across diverse regions including Kampala, Masindi, Pallisa, Katakwi, and Kalungu. By entering innovative partnerships—such as teaming up with the Sustainable Climate Impact Fund (SCIF) to refurbish freshwater boreholes and scale eco-friendly water purification technology—WaterAid successfully bridges public health requirements with long-term climate adaptation across emerging economies.
