Company Description

Bayimba Cultural Foundation is a premier multi-branched arts and culture organization in Uganda, established in June 2006 by Faisal Kiwewa. Operating as a highly respected non-profit entity, Bayimba acts as a massive umbrella organization dedicated to uplifting East Africa’s creative industries. Its core institutional mandate focuses on fostering cross-cultural exchange, providing professional development workshops, and professionalizing the arts sector to transform creative talent into sustainable livelihoods for African youth.
The foundation’s flagship platform is the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts, which officially launched in 2008 as a leading multidisciplinary arts celebration. This iconic event brings together an eclectic fusion of music, contemporary dance, theatre, visual arts, literature, and film on a single platform. In addition to its flagship festival, Bayimba spearheads several specialized sister platforms, including the Kampala International Theatre Festival, the Amakula International Film Festival, and DOADOA—the East African Performing Arts Market.
A major turning point for the organization occurred in 2017 when it purchased Lunkulu Island, a beautiful 92-acre sanctuary nestled on the shores of Lake Victoria within the Mukono and Buikwe districts. The foundation transformed this island into the permanent home of the Bayimba Centre for Visual and Performing Arts, moving its annual festival there permanently starting in 2018. Designed as an ecologically sensitive and creative village, the center serves as a permanent hub for artist residencies, production suites, live exhibitions, and green architecture.
Operationally, Bayimba drives massive socio-economic impact through high-profile international development partnerships and educational reforms. Through its specialized Bayimba Academy, the organization recently collaborated with the British Council to formally integrate Uganda’s creative economy into the national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system. Furthermore, the foundation leads the implementation of the massive CREATE Programme, a structural consortium initiative targeting over 84,000 financially disadvantaged young women, refugees, and persons with disabilities to enable their direct access to formal employment within the creative economy.
