Job Description
Job purpose: He/She will be a key member of the hospital clinical management team whose primary role is to oversee and manage provision of comprehensive care to women before, during, and after childbirth, including antenatal care, labor support, delivery of babies, and postnatal care for mothers and newborns.
Key Responsibilities
1. Antenatal Care: Provide full antenatal care to admitted pregnant mothers, conduct screenings, monitor women’s health and progress during pregnancy, and deliver health education on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, birth preparedness, and newborn care.
2. Labor and Delivery: Support women during labor, monitor fetal well-being, perform spontaneous and assisted vaginal deliveries, and administer medications and intravenous infusions as needed.
3. Postnatal Care: Provide essential newborn care, monitor the health status of both mother and baby, offer advice on infant care and breastfeeding, and help families with their new babies.
4. Health Education: Conduct health facility and community education sessions on a wide range of health topics, including lifestyle, family planning, and recognizing signs of complications requiring medical attention.
5. Clinical Management: Assess progress during pregnancy and childbirth, manage complications, recognize and report warning signs that require referral to a specialist, such as an obstetrician or neonatologist.
6. Record Keeping and Reporting: Document and make daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports for the maternity and postnatal units to meet legal and professional requirements and maintain patient records.
7. Mentorship and Leadership: Mentor and educate junior staff members, contribute to developing guidelines or standard operating procedures for midwifery services, and lead or support midwifery and newborn care teams.
8. Collaboration: Work effectively with other health professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure holistic patient care.
9. Management of medical commodities and sundries: Quantify, forecast and make requisitions of medical commodities and sundries for maternity unit. Monitor utilization of medical commodities and make accountability for the medical commodities and sundries
10. Risk Management: Identify and manage risks related to maternity care, implement safety and quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.11. Human Resource & Administration: Manage maternity staff duty schedules, performance, and leave plans. Conduct orientation and ongoing professional development for staff. Carry out annual performance appraisals and provide feedback. Enforce strict adherence to code of conduct and professional ethics
Essential qualifications, Skills and Qualities
Qualification and experience: Diploma or Degree in midwifery with 7 years experience in midwifery and at least 3 years in a leadership position. Must be registered with nursing and midwifery council.
Clinical Skills: Strong skills in assessing patient needs, clinical assessment, and managing both normal and high-risk pregnancies and deliveries.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Compassion and Calmness: A patient, compassionate, calm, and cool-headed demeanor, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Leadership: Good leadership skills, including the ability to mentor junior staff and contribute to decision-making and team planning.
Professionalism: Adherence to professional standards, ethical practices, and regulatory requirements set by bodies like the Nursing and Midwifery council of Uganda.
