Action for Humanitarian Initiatives-Uganda (AFHI Uganda) is an indigenous non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to improving the health, protection, and socio-economic wellbeing of vulnerable children, youth, and women. Established in 2013 and registered by the National Bureau for NGOs under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the social entity operates on a rights-based framework. Grounded in its core vision of seeing healthy and wealthy communities enjoying their natural rights, the organization implements localized interventions that combat poverty, systemic exploitation, and health vulnerabilities.
The organization maintains its principal coordinating headquarters situated in Kagoma along Bombo Road within the Wakiso District. Operating with a professional team of development experts, field officers, and social workers, AFHI Uganda coordinates its community outreach across both rural districts and fragile humanitarian emergency contexts. Rather than relying on top-down development models, the group leverages grassroots community dialogues, close partnerships with local government units (like Sub-County Community Development Officers), and action research to co-create sustainable solutions.
Operationally, the NGO’s extensive program portfolio is structured around six thematic pillars: child and women’s rights protection, preventive public healthcare, economic strengthening, environmental conservation, educational support, and psychosocial care. In the public health sector, the entity coordinates closely with frontline health workers to deliver Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) information and maternal care. To support education, the team provides essential scholastic materials, structural scholarships, and critical nutrition training directly to orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and their primary caregivers.
To maximize its field delivery, AFHI Uganda executes multi-year projects backed by heavy financing from elite international donors, including the European Union, UN Women, the Women’s Peace & Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), and GIZ. Notable field operations include their Protect Empower Women and Girls (PEW) Project, which supplies comprehensive Gender-Based Violence (GBV) protection, mental health services, and basket-weaving or welding training to refugees in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement. Furthermore, in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, the group actively runs intensive child labor prevention campaigns and vocational training boot camps (spanning hairdressing and tailoring) in eastern regions like the Jinja District.
