Company Description
AquaTrust is an innovative utility enterprise and clean water subscription service operating in Uganda. Managed as a dedicated program under the Ugandan Water Project—with Red Rhino Development serving as its exclusive implementing partner—the initiative was created to eliminate the chronic failure and breakdown of rural water infrastructure. By transitioning traditional community water access into a reliable, “Utility-as-a-Service” model, AquaTrust aims to rid local communities of water-borne diseases and water insecurity.
The core business model of AquaTrust revolves around a fixed monthly subscription service paid seamlessly by rural communities via mobile money. Historically, when a communal borehole or water pump broke down in rural Uganda, villages faced long periods of water scarcity while trying to raise emergency repair funds. Under the AquaTrust framework, community water user committees pool a predictable, transparent monthly fee that shifts all operational risks to the enterprise, guaranteeing an unprecedented borehole uptime of over 99%.
The enterprise delivers four essential services to its enrolled water points to ensure their indefinite lifespans. Upon initial enrollment, certified technicians perform a complete “Initial Upgrade,” replacing old internal mechanisms with premium, high-quality hardware. This is backed by regular quarterly preventative maintenance, comprehensive pump testing, biennial system overhauls, and a strict 24-hour emergency phone or SMS response to resolve sudden mechanical faults at zero additional cost to the community. Advanced water points are even outfitted with high-tech remote sensors to flag structural wear before a breakdown occurs.
Coordinated in close partnership with District Water Offices and local governments, AquaTrust has grown into a highly valued stakeholder within Uganda’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. The enterprise maintains a strategic regional Luwero Service Hub situated directly within the Luwero District Local Government premises right next to the Department of Health. As it aggressively expands its portfolio across Wakiso, Luwero, and neighboring districts, AquaTrust continues to scale its operations to manage larger piped water systems and direct household connections
