Bugweri District is located in the Busoga sub-region of Eastern Uganda, having been carved out of Iganga District and becoming fully operational in July 2018. The district is primarily rural, with its headquarters situated in Cows Market, Bugweri Town Council. Its economy is heavily driven by subsistence and commercial agriculture, with residents specializing in crops like maize, coffee, and rice, while also benefiting from its strategic location along the main highway connecting Jinja to Tororo.
The Bugweri District Local Government serves as the administrative body responsible for service delivery, infrastructure development, and local governance within the district. Led by the District Chairperson and the Chief Administrative Officer, the local government oversees various sectors including primary education, rural health services, and the maintenance of feeder roads. It operates under the decentralization policy of Uganda, aiming to bring public services closer to the people and foster community participation in local decision-making processes.
