Company Description
Building Tomorrow is an international non-profit organization founded in 2006 that is deeply committed to improving access to quality, inclusive foundational education for underserved children in East Africa. Operating primarily across rural communities in Uganda, the organization addresses systemic “learning poverty” by re-enrolling out-of-school children and rapidly accelerating basic literacy and numeracy skills. By partnering directly with local communities and local governments, the organization works to ensure that geography and economic status do not dictate a child’s opportunity to learn and thrive.
The cornerstone of the organization’s current educational intervention is the Roots to Rise program, a targeted foundational learning initiative based on the evidence-backed Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) pedagogy. Instead of adhering strictly to age or grade levels, the program assesses children and groups them by their actual learning capabilities to deliver tailored, interactive instruction in reading and basic mathematics. While the organization historically focused on expanding physical access to education by managing the construction of over 80 public primary schools in hard-to-reach areas, its model has evolved to heavily emphasize these community-based learning camps to effectively stem widespread learning loss.
To implement and sustain these programs at scale, the organization relies on a powerful, community-driven delivery network led by recent university graduates. Through the Building Tomorrow Fellowship, these trained young leaders are deployed to rural districts for two years to build local capacity, manage educational resources, and coordinate interventions. The Fellows upskill thousands of local residents known as Community Education Volunteers (CEVs), who directly facilitate the foundational learning camps, conduct door-to-door community outreach, and work closely with families to permanently bring children back into the formal schooling system.
The efficacy of this community-powered model is supported by rigorous research, including formal impact evaluations that demonstrate substantial gains in student learning velocity and direct instructional time compared to traditional classrooms. To institutionalize these successes, the organization maintains strategic partnerships with national educational authorities, such as Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports, which helps integrate these community learning strategies into the broader public framework. Ultimately, the organization continues to act as a vital catalyst for systemic change, transforming rural communities into spaces where every child can achieve foundational literacy.
