Cordaid is a prominent internationally operating emergency relief and development organization established in 2000 in The Hague, Netherlands. Formed through the strategic merger of pioneering Dutch Catholic aid agencies dating back to World War I, the organization is rooted in Christian social traditions and stands as a founding member of Caritas Internationalis. Following its landmark 2021 merger with the prominent Protestant agency ICCO, Cordaid has scaled its operations to address systemic vulnerabilities in over 20 fragile and conflict-affected countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The organization’s core operational philosophy focuses entirely on breaking the vicious cycle of poverty and exclusion through comprehensive system strengthening and locally-led development. In East Africa, Cordaid Uganda has been actively transforming rural livelihoods for more than 26 years. Managing its national portfolio through localized project teams, the country arm places a heavy emphasis on youth empowerment, since nearly 78% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 30. To combat systemic rural challenges like underemployment and food insecurity, the agency collaborates with local civil society actors to deploy market-system development models, financial inclusion packages, and robust vocational skilling frameworks.
The organization’s modern field impact is driven by highly targeted initiatives that directly benefit hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers and young people. Key active programs include the Skilling in Agripreneurship for Increased Youth Employment (SAY) project, which builds climate-resilient livelihoods for refugee communities in West Nile, and the Agricultural Governance Results Improvement Project, supporting over 112,000 smallholders. Concurrently, Cordaid runs specialized social initiatives like the Healthy Empowered Youth for Better Outcomes (HEYO) project, revitalizing youth-friendly clinics to curb teenage pregnancies and protect reproductive health.
