Company Description

E-Bus Xpress Kiira Ltd (EBX) is a pioneering green mass transit and logistics company operating in Uganda. Established as a subsidiary of the state-backed automotive manufacturer Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), EBX aims to transition the country’s fragmented and informal public transit systems into a structured, eco-friendly “Mobility-as-a-Service” (MaaS) model. The initiative directly supports the government’s broader “Buy Uganda Build Uganda” (BUBU) policy by utilizing locally assembled, zero-emission vehicles to tackle urban traffic congestion and pollution.
The company reached a landmark operational milestone on August 28, 2026, when it officially rolled out its fleet into Kira Municipality and the wider Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA). For this expansion, EBX deployed fully air-conditioned Kayoola Electric Buses built at the Kiira Vehicle Plant. The initial phase services three primary feeder corridors heavily utilized by daily commuters: Ntinda–Kisasi–Kyanja–Kungu, Ntinda–Najjera–Kira–Nakwero, and Ntinda–Naalya–Namugongo–Sonde.
EBX sets a new standard for East African public transit by operating on strict timetables and an entirely cashless payment structure. In collaboration with telecom giant MTN Uganda, passengers pay for transit digitally using prepaid EBX smart cards, digital wristbands, or the EBX Connect mobile app powered by MTN MoMo. To elevate the passenger experience, the buses are comprehensively outfitted with onboard amenities including free high-speed Wi-Fi, integrated phone charging outlets, and modern safety surveillance systems. Financially, the service is structured to remain highly accessible and competitive against traditional fossil-fuel-powered matatus. Standard adult fares start from as low as UGX 800 up to a maximum cap of UGX 2,200 depending on the distance, while school students receive a discounted flat rate starting at UGX 400 to support safe educational commutes. With plans to aggressively scale its fleet to 50 electric buses by the end of 2026, EBX is rapidly positioning itself to expand directly into Kampala Central and major intercity routes
