Company Description
Eco Brixs is an award-winning environmental social enterprise dedicated to pioneering sustainable waste management and green employment across Uganda. Founded in 2017 by Andy Bownds, the organization established its core operational headquarters and primary recycling facility in Masaka City. It was created to tackle the catastrophic lack of formal solid waste management infrastructure in a country where more than 600 tonnes of plastic waste are discarded every single day, with over 90 percent traditionally ending up in unsafe landfills or being burned illegally.
The organization functions through a highly innovative, community-based closed-loop circular economic model that converts environmental waste into localized commercial wealth. Eco Brixs coordinates a sweeping decentralized supply chain that includes over 75 regional recycling hubs and multiple buy-back centers. Local residents collect all varieties of post-consumer plastic waste, bring them to these designated stations, and receive direct immediate payment per kilogram. The enterprise then transports the collected materials to its central factory where the plastic is sorted, segregated, and processed for upcycling or commercial flake manufacturing.
A defining cornerstone of the venture is its explicit focus on social inclusion, poverty alleviation, and youth empowerment. By creating an accessible and dignified market for plastic collection, the enterprise has established vital income opportunities for more than 5,500 vulnerable individuals, prioritizing persons with disabilities, marginalized women, and unemployed youth. Beyond the factory floor, the group actively drives community education and systemic change by partnering with organizations like the Buganda Kingdom and the Masaka Diocese, while establishing interactive Eco Clubs in schools to teach the younger generation the dangers of plastic consumption.
The diverse catalog of durable eco-products, raw material processing outputs, and community initiatives engineered by the social enterprise includes:
- Eco Plastic Lumber and Sheets: Manufactured from 100 percent recycled plastic to act as a water-resistant, termite-proof, and low-maintenance alternative to natural timber.
- Plastic-Sand Composite Pavers: Highly durable building bricks and tiles developed for heavy-duty paving that test stronger, lighter, and cheaper than concrete.
- Agricultural Eco-Troughs: Heavy-duty, weather-resistant feeding and watering structures weighing 60 kilograms, engineered specifically for livestock farmers.
- Eco Toilet Slabs: Compact and lightweight 9.8-kilogram sanitary bases designed to provide affordable, long-lasting, and easy-to-install latrine infrastructure for rural villages.
- Sustainable Playground Equipment: High-quality community assets including park swings, seesaws, and public fitness gear distributed to free urban exercise parks.
- Industrial PET Flakes: High-grade washed plastic flakes processed and exported to upstream closed-loop markets for bottle-to-bottle factories and fiber producers.
