Company Description
Health Access Connect (HAC) is a dynamic non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2014 with the core mission of linking remote and hard-to-reach communities in Uganda to vital medical services. Co-founded by Kevin Gibbons and Carolyne Ariokot, the organization was born out of a critical need observed in the isolated fishing villages of Lake Victoria. Many residents in these marginalized areas suffer from preventable illnesses and death due to the excessive travel distances and prohibitive transportation costs required to reach the nearest permanent public health centers.
The core of HAC’s field strategy centers on its Medicycles program, an award-winning model that utilizes micro-financed motorcycle taxis (boda bodas) to transport public health workers and medical supplies directly into isolated villages. Because Ugandan law mandates that only licensed professionals can distribute medicines, HAC effectively “brings the health facility” to the people. Operating on a predictable, community-led schedule, these setup teams establish one-day monthly or bi-monthly outreach clinics to offer comprehensive, integrated primary healthcare directly within the villages.
Through these mobile pop-up clinics, vulnerable populations gain free access to lifesaving medical services that would otherwise be out of reach. The core healthcare portfolio features antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV patients, critical immunizations for children, prenatal and antenatal care for expectant mothers, family planning resources, and acute treatments for malaria. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the outreach operations, HAC incorporates a local contribution system (approximately 2,000 Ugandan Shillings or $0.55 per patient), allowing the communities themselves to actively micro-fund the transit costs of the visiting health workers.
Headquartered along Bukoto–Kisaasi Road in Kampala, the non-profit has scaled its operations dramatically from its initial island roots. The organization actively partners with local Village Health Teams (VHTs) and now spans over 20 districts across the Central, Eastern, and Western regions of Uganda. Alongside its flagship Medicycles project, its structured initiatives like the Treat & Teach Project work to eliminate commodity stockouts and provide high-frequency training certificates to partner clinic staff in rural districts like Masaka and Kalangala
