Company Description
Heifer International Uganda is a prominent non-governmental organization that has worked to eliminate hunger and poverty since establishing its operations in the country in 1982. Initially launching with a modest distribution of just a handful of cows, the country program has expanded significantly over more than four decades to improve livelihoods. Today, the organization drives community-led, environmentally sound economic development across dozens of districts in the Central, Eastern, Northern, and West Nile regions of Uganda.
The entity is currently guided by its ambitious Signature Program strategy, which aims to enhance the competitiveness, employability, and climate resilience of 400,000 smallholder farmers by 2030. A core pillar of this initiative requires that 60% of all primary beneficiaries are women and young people, groups that historically face significant bottlenecks in securing agricultural financing and owning assets. By organizing rural smallholders into structured agricultural cooperatives and associations, Heifer Uganda assists families in closing the living income gap and achieving long-term food self-sufficiency.
Heifer International Uganda focuses its interventions across diverse value chains, including dairy, beef, poultry, swine, oilseeds, and horticulture. To combat modern ecological challenges, the organization embeds climate-smart practices into these industries, highlighted by initiatives like the Shs14 billion ($4 million) Green Dairy Investment Program launched to scale bio-digesters and solar milk-chilling hubs. Furthermore, their community-led development framework emphasizes “Passing on the Gift”, where recipient families pass animal offspring, seeds, or training to neighbors to amplify local impact.
Technological innovation and strategic youth empowerment serve as key enablers for the organization’s modern field operations. Through partnerships like the East Africa Youth Inclusion Program and collaborations with Rotary International, the agency equips thousands of youth with vital vocational and business skills. Additionally, its annual AYuTe Africa Challenge Uganda drives agritech advancement by providing millions in cash grants to young tech innovators, scaling localized tools like smart poultry brooders, crop monitors, and automated solar water pumps.
