Company Description
IOM Uganda, the localized branch of the International Organization for Migration (UN Migration), is the leading intergovernmental body governing human mobility in the country. Established globally in 1951, the agency officially launched its country operations in Uganda in 1988. Operating in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, the organization’s mandate centers on promoting safe, orderly, and humane migration, ensuring the protection of vulnerable displaced populations while advancing national developmental goals.Â
The entity manages a diverse programmatic portfolio divided across four pillars: facilitating migration, regulating migration, addressing forced migration, and managing migration health. Through its specialized divisions, IOM coordinates massive refugee resettlement frameworks, emergency humanitarian crisis responses, and climate-induced mobility adaptations. Additionally, it plays a vital role in national border governance and labour migration management, having supported the government in pioneering initiatives like the Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration and the rollout of Uganda’s first-ever National Migration Policy.Â
A crucial component of its infrastructure is its specialized service centers clustered within the capital city. In Kampala, the agency operates its central Country Office on Bukoto Crescent in Naguru, alongside a dedicated Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC), a specialized Transit Centre for refugees, and the Canadian Visa Application Centre (CVAC) located in Kololo. The MHAC, in particular, delivers vital pre-departure medical evaluations and health-seeking orientation programs for migrants traveling to countries like Canada, the USA, and the UK.Â
To maintain an effective presence across Uganda’s massive humanitarian landscape, IOM extends its administrative reach heavily beyond the capital into frontline field environments. The agency oversees operational sub-offices strategically placed directly inside prominent refugee-hosting communities and rural border points, including Nakivale, Kyangwali, Kyaka II, Moroto, Moyo, and Yumbe. By collaborating with the Ministry of Health and international donors, IOM frequently supplies border screening tools, cross-border disease surveillance, and population mobility mapping data to secure vulnerable populations against sudden public health shocks.
