The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is a major state corporation under the Ministry of Roads and Transport of the Republic of Kenya. Established in January 1978 under an Act of Parliament, the parastatal is headquartered at the Kipevu Head Office in Mombasa, Kenya. The agency holds the strict legal mandate to develop, maintain, operate, improve, and regulate all scheduled seaports along Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline and its inland waterways.
The primary flagship facility under its operational portfolio is the Port of Mombasa, which stands as the largest and busiest deep-water port in East Africa. Beyond Mombasa, KPA manages a expanding network of maritime infrastructure including the newly developed Lamu Port—a critical asset under the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor project—alongside smaller coastal feeder ports like Malindi, Kilifi, Shimoni, and Vanga. To streamline cargo transit further inland, the corporation also administers Inland Container Depots (ICDs) at Embakasi in Nairobi, Naivasha, and Kisumu Port along Lake Victoria.
Operationally, the authority plays a vital role as the logistical backbone for the Northern Corridor, serving as the principal trade gateway for landlocked East African nations. By linking its maritime terminals directly with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and cross-border road networks, KPA coordinates transit traffic for Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. To cater directly to these regional markets and enhance cargo clearing efficiency, the corporation maintains dedicated international liaison offices in Kampala, Uganda and Kigali, Rwanda.
To sustain high volumes of international commerce, the organization heavily implements digital tracking systems, modern crane infrastructure, and customs partnerships. Through the centralized KPA Online Portal via eCitizen, clearing agents and consignees can seamlessly track maritime containers, lodge documentation, and settle billing invoices online. By prioritizing green port policies, automated container terminals, and joint decongestion plans with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), KPA systematically drives down vessel turnaround times to boost global trade competitiveness.
