Company Description
Kulika Uganda is a non-profit organisation registered with the NGO Board in Uganda and traces its roots to Kulika UK, which was established in 1981. The initiative was founded by Patricia Brenninkmeyer, a former social worker in Uganda who responded to the severe disruption of academic and institutional systems in the post-Idi Amin era. Recognising the urgent need to restore opportunity for capable but disadvantaged learners, she began by supporting postgraduate scholarships for bright Ugandan students at a time when national structures were still recovering.
Patricia’s deep concern for children’s welfare, particularly nutrition and education, shaped the organisation’s early direction. Agriculture was introduced not merely as an economic activity but as a practical response to food insecurity, ensuring children could be fed while simultaneously creating learning and livelihood opportunities. Over time, while Kulika Uganda has developed significant operational autonomy, it continues to share core values and strategic alignment with Kulika UK.
From its initial focus on postgraduate scholarships, Kulika Uganda expanded into broader community development programming, with a strong emphasis on Ecological Organic Agriculture. The Community Development Programme now trains communities in sustainable livelihood practices, equipping them with technical skills and knowledge to enhance food security, generate income, and contribute to environmentally responsible development. Through this integrated model, the organisation supports self-reliance and long-term resilience at household and community levels.
