Company Description

The Law Development Centre (LDC) is the sole institution in Uganda mandated to provide practical legal training for law graduates. Established by the Act of Parliament in 1970, it functions under the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. The Centre bridges the gap between university theoretical education and the actual practice of law.
The primary and most notable program at LDC is the postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, commonly known as the “Bar Course.” Passing this rigorous course is a mandatory prerequisite for any lawyer wishing to practice as an advocate and advocate before the courts of Uganda. In addition to the Bar Course, LDC offers diplomas in human rights, law, and forensic science.
To increase accessibility and manage high student volumes, LDC operates across multiple campuses in Uganda. The main campus is located in Kampala, complemented by regional branches in Mbarara (Western Uganda) and Lira (Northern Uganda). These campuses maintain uniform academic standards and examination bodies to ensure consistent quality nationwide.
Beyond education, LDC plays a critical role in the Ugandan legal system through law reform and community service. It is tasked with compiling, editing, and publishing law reports, as well as researching legal developments. Furthermore, LDC operates a Legal Aid Clinic that provides free legal services to indigent persons, offering students hands-on experience while serving the public.
