Company Description
The Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a semi-autonomous academic research center located within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Founded in 2015, it acts as a premier specialized institute in sub-Saharan Africa dedicated to improving lung health through high-quality research, specialized clinical care, and professional training.
The institute was created through a partnership between Makerere University and the Lung Consortium International, Ltd. It bridges the gap between research and care for both communicable and non-communicable respiratory diseases, such as Tuberculosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer, serving thousands of patients annually.
As of 2026, the institute is undergoing a major expansion, including the construction of a new six-level “Home Building” designed to become a regional center of excellence in lung health. This landmark project, initiated following its 10-year anniversary, features modern research laboratories and a center for advanced pulmonary and intensive care.
The Makerere University Lung Institute offers a wide range of specialized services, training, and research initiatives, including:
- Specialized clinical care for TB, Asthma, COPD, and lung cancer.
- Advanced pulmonary care including intensive care, interventional pulmonology, and thoracic surgery.
- Conducting high-level research, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies.
- Training respiratory scientists, pulmonologists, and thoracic surgeons.
- Community-based interventions for pulmonary rehabilitation.
