Company Description

The Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is a premier higher education and medical research institution based in Kampala, Uganda. Originally established in 1954 as the Department of Preventive Medicine, it has evolved over seven decades into a regional powerhouse for public health training across Sub-Saharan Africa. Following immense growth in its research and academic portfolios, the Makerere University Governing Council granted MakSPH full autonomy as a stand-alone school with College status.
The institution is structured around four primary academic departments: Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Health Policy, Planning and Management; Disease Control and Environmental Health; and Community Health and Behavioural Sciences. According to the MakSPH Official Website, the school hosts more than 1,000 students enrolled across over 12 specialized undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs. To ensure training remains closely aligned with real-world practice, the school maintains multiple district field-training sites where students actively participate in outbreak response and disease surveillance.
MakSPH is highly regarded for its massive research output, frequently contributing nearly half of Makerere University’s total scientific publications. Its comprehensive, peer-reviewed data directly shapes health policies for the Uganda Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and various global implementation agencies. The school’s extensive research portfolio targets critical health milestones, including maternal and newborn health, HIV/AIDS tracking, universal health coverage, and climate change resilience.
Backed by strategic global financers like the U.S. Government and USAID, the school continues to expand its physical and digital infrastructure footprint. Its primary facilities are centered around the New Mulago Hospital Complex, with a modern public health hub finishing construction on the Makerere Main Campus. Through these investments, MakSPH coordinates large-scale, multi-country health programs across 35 African countries, fortifying health security across the continent.
