Company Description
Mandela National Stadium, widely known among locals as Namboole Stadium, is Uganda’s premier multi-purpose sports complex. Located on Namboole Hill in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, it sits approximately 11 kilometers east of Kampala’s central business district. Opened in 1997, the stadium was constructed using a $36 million grant from the People’s Republic of China and was officially inaugurated with a historic concert by the legendary South African reggae artist Lucky Dube. It was subsequently named in honor of South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon and former president, Nelson Mandela. [
The stadium primarily serves as the official home ground for the Uganda national football team, the Uganda Cranes, while also hosting local Uganda Premier League clubs like the Uganda Revenue Authority FC and Police FC. Beyond its core focus on football matches, the facility features an IAAF-standard athletics track, making it a central venue for national track and field championships. Its expansive, versatile layout has additionally transformed it into a focal point for large-scale public gatherings, including national political rallies, state functions, and major cultural festivals.
Following years of heavy utility, the stadium underwent an extensive multi-billion-shilling renovation by the UPDF Engineering Brigade to resolve safety gaps and meet rigorous international standards. This initial modernization campaign introduced high-tech floodlights, digital scoreboards, updated dressing rooms, and permanent bucket seating that temporarily normalized its capacity to about 45,000 spectators. The venue successfully hosted top-tier continental matches, returning elite international sports directly to Kampala.
Mandela National Stadium is undergoing a massive Phase Two redevelopment spearheaded by the government alongside international contractors like Turkey’s Summa Construction. This ambitious upgrade includes structural expansions to scale the seating capacity up to over 60,000, installing a fully covered roof, remodeling the exterior facade, and adding an indoor multi-purpose arena alongside an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
