Company Description

The Medical Research Council (MRC) / UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized center of excellence for health research and training. Established in 1988 at the request of the Ugandan government to address the HIV epidemic, the unit has since broadened its scope to tackle a wide range of infectious and non-communicable diseases. It operates as a strategic partnership between the Uganda Virus Research Institute, the UK Medical Research Council, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which it formally joined in 2018.
The unit’s scientific work is organized into three main strategic themes: Viral Pathogens, Vaccines and Immunity, and Non-Communicable Diseases. Its multidisciplinary research spans basic science, epidemiology, and social-behavioral studies to evaluate new healthcare options and inform national and global health policies. Key platforms such as the General Population Cohort in southwestern Uganda and advanced immunology laboratories provide the critical infrastructure needed to conduct large-scale clinical trials and long-term population studies.
Headquartered in Entebbe, the unit maintains established research outposts in Masaka, Kalungu, and Kampala to ensure a broad geographical reach for its studies. Beyond its clinical impact, the unit is a major hub for capacity building, providing mentorship and specialized training to the next generation of African scientists and health leaders. Under its current leadership, the organization continues to focus on turning high-level science into practical health solutions that benefit both local communities and the global medical field.
