Mengo Hospital—also commonly known as Namirembe Hospital—is a private, faith-based, not-for-profit community hospital located on Namirembe Hill along Sir Albert Cook Road in Kampala, Uganda. It is celebrated as the oldest hospital in Uganda and East Africa, having been founded on February 22, 1897, by missionary physician Dr. Sir Albert Ruskin Cook under the Church Missionary Society. Over more than a century, it has grown from a simple medical tent under a mango tree into a prominent cornerstone of the Ugandan healthcare landscape.
The institution is wholly owned by the Church of Uganda and operates under a governance structure aligned with the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB). It functions as a prominent referral facility with a capacity of approximately 250 to 331 inpatient beds. Guided by its Christian medical witness, the hospital focuses on providing holistic, patient-centered, and affordable medical care to individuals from all walks of life.
Administratively, Mengo Hospital is divided into multiple clinical directorates and core departments. It delivers extensive specialized outpatient and inpatient services including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Furthermore, it houses highly rated specialized units such as an advanced dental center, a comprehensive eye complex, a 24/7 intensive care unit (ICU), and a dedicated accident and emergency facility.
In addition to clinical services, Mengo Hospital serves as a major teaching and research institution. It acts as the primary teaching hospital for the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Medicine, helping to train the next generation of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. Through long-term international partnerships and its independent investment arm, the hospital continuously expands its infrastructure to meet modern healthcare demands across the region.
